Fire Strikes Church
Most of you know the details about the fire that occurred here Trinity
Lutheran.... But for those who are reading about this for the first
time, on Saturday, June 21st, the Wauseon Fire Department and 7
area fire crews responded to a call at 6:04 p.m. right after the conclusion
of Saturday worship. Custodians Jerry & Janice Bostelman
investigated the building after smelling smoke, discovered smoke
filling the attic space, and immediately called 911 (our “thanks” to
them for their quick action!)

The fire was contained to a 20 by 30 foot section of the attic. Water,
heat & smoke caused damage in the church sanctuary, especially to
the ceiling & attic areas. Firefighters punched numerous holes in the
roof and tore out a portion of the sanctuary ceiling to reach the fire.
There was no smoke or water damage to the educational wing &
day care, and water damage was minimal in the basement.

The pulpit and lectern areas were covered and remained mostly undamaged.
Church members removed valuables (like hymnals, piano,
altar, candlesticks, etc) from the sanctuary before they could
suffer damage. Items that could not be removed were covered up—
like the church pews and the organ. (thanks to all the members that
helped out in any way...)

Presently a restoration company is working to patch the roof and
clean up water damage.

On Sunday, June 22nd, church services were held outdoors in the
Ohio Gas Company’s parking lot. It was a lovely sunny summer’s
morning for worshiping outside, and Trinity’s talented celebration
band provided accompaniment to our worship songs. And it seemed
fitting that there was even a outdoor baptism that morning.

For the next several weeks or so, plans are to hold worship services
downstairs in the fellowship hall until repairs are completed.

We are so lucky in so many ways.....that the fire did not occur when
the church was empty...that it was mostly confined to the sanctuary
area.....that loss of valuables was very minimal...that there were no
injuries....our thanks to God for his faithful watch over his flock that
worships at the corner of Shoop & Leggett.
